Orientation and Mobility Services in Nigeria by Vision Status

In many developing countries, orientation and mobility (O&M) services programs are inadequate. A survey of 296 visually impaired Nigerians was conducted in 2018 to assess availability of, experiences with, O&M training. Three-fourths those sampled were blind. items analyzed by vision status. Persons with partial sight more likely than blind persons use a cane without the assistance human guide less ask for help if lost unaccompanied. However, they did not express confidence their ability travel independently, suggesting sense stigmatization. Level positively associated extent training degree skill both mobility, supporting importance sufficient intensity. Analysis revealed that partially sighted individuals substituting another device white cane, yet reporting either wanting or needing implying perception Among owning canes, reported difficulty navigating citing primarily physical impediments adverse topographic conditions.
